The trailer, van, truck bed, hunting blind, tent, airstream, airbnb, and of course, the campsite. These are all places our KujuKIN have brewed their Kuju pour overs at since we landed in REI in 2017. How do we know this? Because they share their posts with us on Instagram - and it’s awesome! For many of us at Kuju, seeing those posts gives us the energy to push through each week, especially the tough ones, with a keen sense of gladness that people are enjoying what we’re bringing to the world.
Yet over the years, we've been asked time and again the same question, just in different ways. That question: “Do you guys have whole beans?” Or in a different form: “I love your coffee for when I travel, but I’ve got a set up at home. I’d definitely buy your beans if you had some though.”
The problem is we never really took the requests for whole beans seriously. Deep down inside we thought folks really loved Kuju because of the pour over filter we pioneered at the start of it all. After all, there was hardly anything like it on the market when we launched. REI was still carrying Starbucks VIA for goodness’ sake, and the filter seemed to be the reason we landed great press, like Outside Magazine’s “Best of” list, or the Washington Post’s Holiday Gift Guide. It was the reason Subaru ordered almost 100,000 units in our first year of full operation indeed.
Over time, however, and I mean over about 2.5 years, we finally started to listen to the feedback, mostly because it just kept coming. Not that there was an overwhelming flood of feedback, but more that it was consistent. Oftentimes commenting on the “superb taste” of the coffee, or how it “tasted great, even without cream or sugar”, or how “it’s dark but not burnt”. This was finally confirmed when we decided to test selling whole beans earlier this year and sold out in 24 hours.
