The internet has run wild...with an ultra-trendy whipped coffee drink – Dalgona Coffee. Yes, we know you probably have already seen this on Instagram, YouTube and for you young folk, on TikTok, but when we learned about Dalgona Coffee and realized that its main ingredient was instant coffee, we thought we could do better. After all, Kuju Coffee was founded by two brothers who got tired of instant coffee. So we spent some time in our experimental kitchen to invent the Kuju version of Dalgona Coffee. Hint: we use real specialty-coffee.

As we were putting this recipe together, we wondered, “where does the name Dalgona come from?” After a quick Google search, it turns out that Dalgona is the name of a Korean honeycomb toffee that a famous Korean celebrity thinks this beverage tastes like...very interesting! Now that we got that out of the way, let’s get onto the recipe.

Usually the whipped coffee part of Dalgona Coffee is an equal part mixture of instant coffee, sugar and hot water, but to make it Kuju style, we replaced the instant coffee and hot water with a concentrated brew of our Bold Awakening coffee and a little bit of heavy whipping cream to give it a frothy texture. Admittedly, this recipe is more complex, but the end result has a higher quality flavor than if you make it with instant coffee.

The flavor of it is almost like a malty ice cream mixed with strong coffee. For us, we prefer our coffee without as much cream and sugar, so we consider this drink practically a dessert. It’s sweet and delicious but not necessarily the hot morning beverage we crave.

So here’s how to do it:

Brew 4 oz of a Bold Awakening pour over and pour it into a small saucepan. Bring the coffee up to a boil and let it simmer until there is half the volume of liquid. This will create a more concentrated 2 oz coffee with less water but more flavor. Let the coffee cool. Pour coffee concentrate into a medium sized bowl along with two tablespoons of sugar and two tablespoons of heavy whipping cream. With your hand whisk or hand mixer, whisk the ingredients together until it becomes frothy and you have small peaks.

Grab a serving glass filled halfway with ice. Pour regular milk to the top of the ice, then spoon your whipped coffee mixture into the glass. This drink is insanely delicious. While it is very sweet, the whipped coffee mixed with milk makes for an indulgent dessert drink any sweet tooth will love.

So there you have it! Dalgona Coffee – upgraded Kuju style.
